China is home not only to glorious history and culture, but also to rich scenic resources – a precious, non-renewable inheritance. Since 1982, the Chinese government has designated 187 Scenic Areas, which are the equivalent of “national parks” in other countries. In order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of Chinese national parks, and to help society understand the importance of conservation, the first ‘Chinese and Global National Parks’ Photography Contest will be held in Beijing from May to September 2007. Following the contest, in September 2007, an exhibition will be held. Seven well-known photography experts will serve as judges for the contest.
1. Organizers
National Park Office, Ministry of Construction, People’s Republic of China
IUCN-The World Conservation Union
The Nature Conservancy (TNC)
ZSHT Media
2. Rules
1) The contest is open to all photographers. Entries are welcome from any location in the world. Contestants are welcome to provide several pictures each. Only one picture will be selected for entrance into the contest; the rest may be selected for the September exhibition.
2) Entries are limited to scenic photographs taken in national parks either inside or outside of China.
3) Picture requirements
Contestants need to provide both a high quality digital copy (to be submitted on a CD) and a clear printed copy of each photo. The printed photograph should be 12 inches in length or width – whichever is the longer dimension. Digital files should be no smaller than 30 MB (TIFF Format).
Contestants must clearly fill in the following application form. Photographs submitted without an accompanying form are NOT acceptable. Photocopies of this form are valid.
The contest does not accept digitally edited photographs, or work modified in the darkroom.
3. Awards
Winners will be announced after the contest ends, in September 2007. Approximately 400 entries will receive awards.
There are six categories of awards. Each category has one “1st place,” ten “2nd places” and twenty “3rd places.”
The six categories are:
1) The most representative natural scenery
2) The most representative cultural scenery
3) The most lovely scenery
4) The most majestic scenery
5) The most spontaneous scenic shots
6) The best seasonal scenery (e.g., fall colors, winter scenery, etc.)
Moreover, 200 “honorable mentions” will be distributed.
All contestants will receive discounts when purchasing the contest and exhibition album, and each winner will receive a ticket to the exhibition and a free album.
4. Closing date
All entries must be received before July 30, 2007.
5. Declaration
1) The Contest is free to enter, however, no remunerations will be given. Pictures (digital or print) will NOT be returned. Winning entries may be used by the organizers in the exhibition and related activities. Other than prizes, no remunerations will be given.
2) Prior to the exhibition, the winning pictures will be published on www.Chinatvhome.com, www.sina.com and other major websites.
3) Photographers are responsible for obtaining the necessary photo releases and ensuring the complete legality of submitted photographs. The organizers will not accept responsibility for infringements on rights of reputation, image rights, personal or otherwise, or rights of authorship.
